New social housing project announced for Minnie St in Southport

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon has announced the construction of new social housing in Southport, with the first tenants expected to move in by the end of next year.

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon has announced the construction of 27 new social housing units in Southport.

The units, developed in partnership with Community Housing (Qld) Limited, will be targeting older people looking at downsizing, in particular women over 50 – a demographic that has been hit particularly hard by the housing crisis.

“We know that one of the biggest groups on our social housing register is single older women,” Ms Scanlon said.

“That’s why you see us building more one and two bedroom homes to specifically target those older individuals in our community who need something fairly small but well located close to services and close to public transport.”

Community Housing Ltd chief financial officer Gavin Potter said the Minnie St project was ideally located for residents’ needs.

“CH always tries to look at our residents and provide not just housing, but a home. Southport’s a great area, well located for medical facilities and close to transport,” he said.

“So we’re really excited to work with the government on this site and deliver additional housing.”

Ms Scanlon said the development was the latest of a number announced for the area including the 200-home Southport Supportive Accommodation project on Scarborough St and plans to build 878 homes at the Health and Knowledge Precinct on Smith St.

Also under construction are homes at Miami, Labrador and Runaway Bay.

With an eye to an election just over five weeks away, Ms Scanlon said such investment was “at risk” if the LNP was elected to government.

“These Minnie Street homes will make a huge difference,” Ms Scanlon said.

“Gold Coasters have seen that we’re serious about delivering Homes for Queenslanders with major projects announced and built, as well as stamp duty and rental reforms.

“That’s all at risk under the LNP.”

Construction on the Minnie St project is expected to begin soon, with the first tenants moving into their new homes late next year.
