A boardwalk has become so popular with locals, and been so battered by storms, that it’s beginning to return to the nature it so splendidly showcases.

Now council, the state and federal governments are stepping in to not just repair but significantly upgrade the Beree-Badalla Reserve Boardwalk at Currumbin Creek.

The City has commenced work on a $3.9 million project which will double the width of the 640m-long boardwalk that stretches through wetlands from the Thrower Drive boat ramp to Salk Oval Parklands.

Shower facilities, a launch ramp, seating areas and fishing platforms will also be included as part of the project, which is being jointly funded by the state and federal governments under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Jenny McAllister said it was exciting to see work on the project begin.

“We are proud to work with local councils and the Miles Government to deliver recovery projects for the Gold Coast Community,” Ms McAllister said.

“It’s fantastic to see work commence on the boardwalk which will mean Queenslanders can soon enjoy a safer and more resilient pathway.”

The state government’s Disaster Recovery Minister Nikki Boyd said the project had been necessitated by the increasing popularity of the boardwalk.

“Heavy use due to its popularity and weather have taken their toll on the boardwalk’s condition,” Ms Boyd said.

“The Miles and Albanese Governments are sharing the boardwalk’s $3.9 million replacement cost under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to boost the City’s Christmas storm recovery.

“We’ve worked closely with the City of Gold Coast on a plan to build back better with a wider boardwalk, new fishing platforms, seating, a kayak launching ramp and outdoor shower.

“Building back better means delivering storm resilient community infrastructure for the enjoyment of Gold Coasters, and interstate and international visitors sharing our great lifestyle and supporting good jobs.”

Division 13 Councillor Josh Martin said council would work to minimise disruption for locals while the upgrade project progressed.

“The renewed boardwalk and new public amenities were part of the Community and Recreational Asset Recovery and Resilience Program,” Mr Martin said.

“The existing boardwalk has deteriorated over time due to large storm surge events, the natural marine environment and increased use by the community.

“These renewal works will improve the resilience of the boardwalk against weather events and the marine environment and will minimise the need for any future maintenance.

“We have ensured the upgraded boardwalk is safe and fully accessible for the thousands of Gold Coasters and visitors who use it each year.

“The City will take all measures possible to minimise disruption during construction and we thank the community in advance for their patience while we create an improved experience in the popular Currumbin Creek area.”

The project is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
