A Gold Coast man allegedly involved in a street fight that left one man with a stab wound in his neck has been freed on bail.

Makaia Jay Wade, 20, was charged alongside his father Jason Ross Wade, 56, in relation to the alleged stabbing at Labrador in July.

Both are charged with unlawful wounding (domestic violence offence).

It is alleged the pair were involved in a verbal argument at a Middle St property that soon escalated to a physical confrontation on the street just before 9pm on July 18.

Police said at the time a 31-year-old Nerang man suffered a significant stab wound to his neck and cuts to his left forearm and ring finger.

He was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Both Makaia Wade and his father have been in custody since their arrests the next day.

The younger Mr Wade applied for bail in Southport Magistrates Court this week, which was opposed by police prosecutions on the grounds they considered him an unacceptable risk of endangering the alleged victim’s safety or interfering with witnesses.

In making her decision, Magistrate Anna Smith said the evidence currently before her indicated issues regarding whether the fight was consensual, who may have brought the knife, and “versions of events” due to the intoxication of those allegedly involved.

She said a photograph of the injury showed it was “no doubt significant”, and that it would likely take 12 to 15 months for the case to be listed for trial in the higher courts.

The court was told Mr Wade and his father had previously worked together but lost their jobs as a result of being remanded in custody.

The 20-year-old would have new work in the landscaping or groundskeeping fields available upon his release, and it was possible his father could again become his co-worker if he successfully applied for bail in the future.

Ms Smith granted the Labrador man’s bail with several strict conditions, including that he surrender his passport and abstain from drugs and alcohol, undertaking testing as required.

The older Mr Wade remains in custody. Both cases are due to return to court on October 11.
