Dozens of people have already applied to rent one of 12 luxury units in the heart of the Toowoomba CBD.

Hutchinson Builders is just days away from finishing work on the new four-storey apartment block on Mylne St in Toowoomba City, just metres from Grand Central Shopping Centre.

The project, conceived by local developers Barry and Mitchell Bernoth, cost $5m to build and supported more than 1200 jobs during construction.

It is understood the mix of one, two and three-bedroom units will be rented out, with LJ Hooker already receiving more than 50 inquiries.

Mitchell Bernoth expressed his delight at the finished product, while standing inside a top-floor apartment with two bedrooms, balcony and ensuite bathroom with walk-in wardrobe.

“We’re very happy with the finished product and excited about it,” he said.

“We’ve been very fortunate throughout the project to partner with some great organisations and businesses like Hutchies, who have achieved the job before schedule (by three months).

“It shows a different avenue of being able to provide rental accommodation.

“LJ Hooker has been doing the marketing for us, they have approximately 50 people interested in renting them before completion.

“There’s definitely demand for this type of product.”

Hutchies team leader Sean Lees said the nine-month construction occurred during a turbulent period for the sector — making the early finish even more impressive.

“I’m really happy and I’m impressed with what the team has been able to achieve down here,” he said.

“It was built at a time when the market was challenging to manage, both with the availability of trades and materials.

“This one was due to be completed by June and we’re going to hand it over at the end of March.”

Mr Lees said the project would add housing stock that was desperately needed in Toowoomba, with the region still enduring a rental vacancy rate below one per cent.

“Anybody within the property industry who can bring options to market is going to be rewarded for doing so, and this is a great example,” he said.

“I congratulate Bernoth Properties for having had the vision to do it — the timing will work out well for them.”

Barry Bernoth was contacted for comment.
