A new childcare centre for more than 100 kids has been planned next to a major homewares centre in a growing Toowoomba suburb.

Home Consortium last month submitted plans to the Toowoomba Regional Council to build a new facility next door to its major shopping and homewares centre on Hume Street in Kearneys Spring.

According to the planning report by Urbis, the centre will act as an extension of the HomeCo site.

“From a land use perspective, the development has been designed to complement the retail/commercial nature of the surrounding area, while ensuring the intended use can operate as intended,” the report said.

“While complementary in scale, the facade is decorated by a range of modern and aesthetically complementary building materials to soften the appearance of the childcare centre.

“The built-form is highly articulated largely as a result of the outdoor play area located within the footprint of the centre.

“This outdoor play area offers a significant recession in the built form and reduces the perception of bulk.

“While the architectural form is not directly consistent with the form of the HomeCo Centre, the design complements and balances the existing development on the site.”

Reports were also submitted relating to traffic and noise impacts as well as engineering and stormwater.

The council has yet to respond with an information request.
