A construction start date for a new $42 million day surgery facility in Toowoomba has been revealed as a Queensland construction company claims the tender to make the centre a reality.
Hutchinson Builders has been awarded the project to build the Toowoomba Day Surgery, set to be located on the Baillie Henderson Hospital campus.
The surgery, featuring two state of the art operating theatres as well as recovery and discharges spaces, was first announced by the state government in last year’s budget.
With construction set to begin later this month, Darling Downs Health executive director infrastructure Paul Clayton said the day surgery was expected to be up and running by December 2023.
“The project will provide additional capacity for our clinical staff to perform day surgery on the Baillie Henderson Hospital campus, which will be home to the new Toowoomba Hospital,” Mr Clayton said.
“The new day surgery will see two state of the art operating theatres constructed. It will also include recovery and discharge spaces and waiting rooms for friends and families.”
Chief executive of Darling Downs Health Annette Scott said the project was just the beginning of the transformation of services across the health district.
“This is really the beginning of a five-year period of construction work that will enhance the health services available to the public and I’m looking forward to hearing the positive feedback from the community as they access these facilities,” Ms Scott said
“Darling Downs Health has received $42 million from the Department of Health to deliver this project.”
The day surgery is in addition to a $1.3 billion funding commitment from the state government in the 2022 budget to build a new hospital at the site of the old Baillie Henderson Hospital.
