Eco-tourism site with 21 cabins at Upper Pilton in Toowoomba region proposed to council

A proposal for a nature-based tourism site south of Toowoomba will aim at helping its guests reconnect with nature in a completely self-sufficient way. Check out the designs here.

Nature-based tourism in Tasmania booms

A concept for a nature-based tourism site at a remote property between Toowoomba and Warwick has been proposed by its developer.

Applicant Riaan De Beer lodged plans with the Toowoomba Regional Council just before Christmas to build 21 “eco-style, off the grid” cabins at the end of Hendrie Road in Upper Pilton for tourists seeking a reconnection with nature.

The land is about an hour southeast of Toowoomba and 50 minutes north of Warwick.

According to the planning report by JCE Developments, the transportable cabins will be supported by a range of infrastructure to ensure the site was self-sufficient.

“Each of these cabins will be established as completely transportable and self-sufficient,” the report said.

“This includes each cabin having its own worm farm waste system, rainwater tanks and solar panels for electricity.”

JCE Developments said the site would operate using a timeshare scheme rather than having guests make bookings.

“The purpose of this application is to gain a development permit to establish an eco-friendly facility, which provides the opportunity for individuals to take a break from their day-to-day life, and escape to a natural environment,” the report said.

“The main purpose of the use is to demonstrate and educate people on how they can live without impacting on the surrounding environmental, among other nature-based activities.

“The difference between the proposed use being defined as nature based tourism rather than a tourist park, is that the proposed use utilises a timeshare scheme for the occupation of the cabins, rather than tourists and travellers making reservation.

“Even though the people that will occupy the cabins are still considered a tourist or traveller, they still have a responsibility to preserve the site, as they will have use rights.”

Activities at the site will include walking and hiking, cycling, bird watching, swimming, photography and stargazing.

The application included extra reports into flood assessment and traffic impacts.
