Buxton Bush Camp in development approval process

A “bush camp” overlooking the Burrum River is seeking approval to be a nature-based tourism operator.
Buxton Bush Camp is situated near the intersection of the Gregory and Burrum Rivers.
The area at 33 Watkins Street Buxton is owned by the Pemberton family, with the Buxton Bush Camp owned under Sleada Developments Pty Ltd as the trustee.
The campsite includes a range of traditional campsite features including informal campsites overlooking the Burrum River, accommodating campers in a range of options from caravans to swags.
The campsite provides an existing camp kitchen, two unisex toilets and a shower.
Additional portable toilets are proposed at the location.
Entry to the campsite is proposed for the end of Watkins Street.
The application states the campsite would play a role in continuing to drive the tourism offering in Buxton township.
“The use complements the rural use and does not derogate the sustainable use of the land or compromise the land for rural activities,” the application states.
“The use supports, rather than undermines, the role of the Buxton township and would not be appropriately located in the township due to its “nature based” use.”
Their application has been referred to the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) for further approval.
