A plan for a major Toowoomba sports precinct valued at $197m has reached a key milestone, with the council sending the project to the state government to attain special approvals.
The Toowoomba Regional Sports Precinct (TRSP) at Charlton, which has been in development for years, could potentially contain facilities for a variety of sports, including rugby league, football, AFL, archery, clay target shooting, netball, softball and cricket.
Councillors voted at last week’s committee meetings to submit that the project be given “local government infrastructure designation” (LGID) by the state government.
An environmental assessment report (EAR), completed by Precinct Urban Planning, was provided as evidence towards achieving the LGID.
According to project manager Leigh Hansen, the milestone would ensure the multistage development could be completed in a streamlined fashion.
“A LGID process is procedurally efficient for the longer development time frame and multiple staged development proposed for the TRSP,” he wrote in his report to councillors.
“The EAR demonstrates that the site is able to be supplied with all required infrastructure and details ways in which the environmental impacts can be managed or mitigated.”
The EAR also gives further insight into the facilities’s amenities and how it would cater for a number of different sports under one roof.
“The precinct will also include a premier hub, consisting of change rooms, clubhouse amenities, food and drink outlet/s and spectator seating, a district park and open space recreation areas.
“The precinct has been designed to provide areas for future expansion and the integration of sporting fields (i.e. oval fields over rectangular fields) to ensure the precinct can be utilised to its full potential during all sporting seasons.”
Councillors were told the TRC would start public consultation for the project soon.
It comes a few months after the council released a special flyover video of how the precinct could look, while also showcasing its size and scope.
