A long-awaited $197m sports park just outside Toowoomba could deliver legacy infrastructure to push for the city’s case to host Olympic events in 10 years’ time.

The Toowoomba Regional Council has advanced its Toowoomba Region Sports Precinct at Charlton to the detailed design stage, more than half a decade after its concept was first approved.

A new flyover video has showcased the scale and size of the project, which will be based on a massive parcel of land off the Toowoomba Bypass.

The video, while not an exact prediction of the precinct’s final facilities, hints at a multitude of rectangular and oval fields for sports like rugby league, union, football and AFL.

The video also points to areas for clay target and indoor shooting, archery, netball, baseball, athletics and cricket.

A green space and children’s playground have also been highlighted as potential features.

The council is now wanting the State Government to give the seven-stage, 20-year project a local government infrastructure designation to fast-track its development.

The council has approved funding for early works at the site which may include construction of an access road and provision of some utilities such as water.

Environment and community chair Councillor James O’Shea said the precinct could offer the right legacy infrastructure to make the city more attractive to sporting authorities ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.

“With the timing of 2032, construction is going to be over seven stages, it gives us an opportunity to leverage off the Olympics,” he said.

Mr O’Shea said the project would help to address the immediate and growing demand for rectangular ovals across the Toowoomba region.

“The biggest demand is the pressure on the use of rectangular fields,” he said.

“There are designs there for multiple fields, but there is space for a premiere facility or stadium.

Otium Planning Group has been the lead consultant with the council on the precinct.

Otium director Jason Leslie said in December he would like to see Clive Berghofer Stadium upgraded to ensure Toowoomba secured Olympic events in 2032.
