NEXUS Infrastructure's newly appointed chief executive officer John Hagan was pleased to announce the transition of geographical investigation to major works on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.
He addressed members of the community with an update on the works at a Picnic Point function yesterday.
"Back in November we started our early works and while you can't see a lot of the evidence we were very busy in geographical investigation which is complete now; surveying works, environmental permit requirements as well as a detailed design of the road," he said.
"We are very pleased to now transition to the major works so beginning April 15 we'll start with a sod-turning ceremony and begin the clearing and grubbing."
He said that by December 2018 the project would be complete.
"We're extremely confident to finish on time and under budget," Mr Hagan said.
Mr Hagan did not shy away about where the work on the crossing would be going.
"We have a commitment to 75 per cent of local participation," he said.
"What that translates to is 1800 direct and indirect jobs.
"The direct jobs are very easy to modify; how many subcontractors we hire, how many direct employees working for Nexus we hire."
Mr Hagan said Nexus Infrastructure also had a commitment to 2.5 per cent of indigenous employment.
He was questioned by Glenvale resident David Hamilton on what sort of involvement the region's construction companies would likely have in the project.
Mr Hagan said the company had been working hard on an industry outreach focus.
"When I say local, I mean local local, not nation-wide companies that have a presence in Toowoomba but local companies from here and (we're) working really hard with state development to make sure there is no reason these companies aren't capable to submit for bids," he said.
Mr Hagan said he was committed to making sure it became a reality.
Nexus Infrastructure will host drop-in information sessions to find out more about the project.
The next will be at the Harlaxton Neighbourhood Centre on April 12 from 3-6pm.
