Toowoomba mum, businesswoman starts new social, friendship group, events Social Me Community

A busy mum and career woman has launched a new social and networking event to help others form friendships and connections.

After seeing a series of posts flood social media from women struggling to form friendships or find the time to be social, Mikaela Smith decided to create a solution for the problem.

The 33-year-old Toowoomba woman started Social Me Community – a group for women across the region to connect, network and make new friends at monthly events.

Ms Smith, who runs a diesel fitting business with her husband, works as a real estate agent and is a mum to three boys and said she knew first-hand how easy it was for women to put their personal needs last.

“From being a mum and running a business, I understand how chaotic life can be and how hard it can be to find the time to do things for yourself,” she said.

“It’s so important for women to have a support network around them and I would be lost without my friends.”

Designed to create a supportive community, Ms Smith said the events were open to everyone whether you’re a mum, career woman, retiree or young adult.

With Covid leaving many people feeling isolated and disconnected from others, the Toowoomba woman said the interest was greater than she initially thought it would be.

“I’ve received four messages from women reaching out because they are a bit apprehensive about coming on their own, but I’ve told each and every one of them they are not alone,” Ms Smith said.

“Covid had a huge impact on everyone socially and mentally so a lot of us are still rebuilding after that, but (the response level) just goes to show how essential these events are.”

Launching the first social event on Saturday, the gathering will be held at the Gaelic Bar at Fitzy’s, between 6pm and 10pm.

More than 37 tickets were purchased for the first event and 25 women have already signed up as members.

Ms Smith said future events would include a night at Axe and Dagger, movie screenings, wine tours and lunches.

While the events are currently open to everyone, there is an opportunity to register as a member to receive deals from local businesses.
