When asked what drives the passion of Mini owners for the distinctive car model, Toowoomba’s Neil Kronk had a straightforward answer.
“You clearly haven’t driven a Mini – did you ever drive a go-kart? They’re like a go-kart, they put a smile on your face – they’re fun,” he said.
Mr Kronk and his colleagues in the Toowoomba branch of the Mini Owners Club of Queensland were keen to share their love of the badge with the rest of the city, hosting the group’s regular coffee and car event outside Repco on Saturday.
The show-and-shine featured Minis from across the decades, along with Mr Kronk’s MG convertible and representatives from the Toowoomba Auto Club.
Mr Kronk, who is Toowoomba’s group captain for the MOCQ, said the Garden City had an outsized love of motoring that he believed stemmed from its lack of proximity to southeast Queensland.
“Toowoomba’s got a bit of a car culture — (as for why), I go back to the answer I give when people ask why is Toowoomba a good place to live,” he said.
“People on the coast don’t go anywhere, but Toowoomba people actually go to the coast and go to the beach.
“Toowoomba is known for that, so what that means is we travel and we have the highest caravan ownership per capita.
“Maybe that whole driving thing is in us, because we’ve got to.
“Your family car, it’s about the destination – this (collection of cars) is about the journey.”
