While Covid-19 has dominated headlines for the better part of two years, experts are warning that this year’s flu season could be severe, especially for elderly and at-risk demographics.

Lockdowns and restrictions related to Covid kept flu numbers down last year, but with social distancing and other restrictions easing experts have warned the colder months could see an increase in flu cases.

Scott Street Pharmacy pharmacist Irma Huskisson said their store has begun to offer the flu vaccine after stock arrived last week.

“I administered our first one (Tuesday), and I definitely recommend people, especially in the over 65 age group and those who are vulnerable such as the immunocompromised,” she said.

“We’ve had a few phone calls about flu shots so now that we’ve got stock I expect to have more people receive the vaccine, I would certainly recommend people get them this year.

“We can also provide a Covid vaccine booster at the same time as the flu vaccine.”

While Queensland has been shielded from a major influenza outbreak due to Covid restrictions, epidemiologist Professor Robert Booy has warned once restrictions ease that could change.

“The uptake of the flu vaccine last year was slow as people were so caught up in Covid but we can’t afford for that to happen again this year. The flu vaccine will arrive in March and bookings should be made now. It would be even better if patients book in to have their booster in the other arm on the same day,” Prof Booy said.

“Flu immunity is very low now and vaccines have never been more important,” he said.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ Queensland Chair Bruce Willett said many Queenslanders were “flu naive”.

“Trends show over the years when cases are very low like they have been during the pandemic a big flu season is likely to follow,” Dr Willett said.
