Cold weather ‘Right on queue for the start of winter’: BOM says

Warnings over toppling trees and power lines have been issued for the Darling Downs, with “damaging winds” expected to strike the region in a matter of hours.

Damaging winds between 70 and 90 km/hr have been predicted for the Darling Downs ahead of an “antarctic blast” striking Queensland.

The Bureau of Meteorology said a strong cold front will strengthen over southwest Queensland this afternoon, bringing the damaging winds and icy temperatures.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Felim Hannessy said a front off the coast moving across the Tasman Sea was responsible for an increase in the westerly winds blowing across the Downs which had the temperatures plummeting.

“Monday should have a maximum of about 18 but it will feel cooler and there might be a few showers about.”

And, it won’t end there, Thursday was expected to drop to four degrees in the morning.

“That’s right on queue for the start of winter,” Mr Hannessy said.

The BOM revealed saturated soils in southeast Queensland will bring an increased risk of gusty winds toppling trees and powerlines.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Toowoomba, Boonah, Clifton, Gatton and Laidley.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.

* Secure loose outdoor items.

* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
