Driving the car was a 24-year-old woman and her two children, a three-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl.

According to 7News, a nearby local heard the woman screaming, “Help my son, help my son.”

Soon later, a passerby grabbed the two children following the crash and rushed them to George Town Hospital.

“A community member who was not involved in the crash was asked to provide assistance before emergency services arrived and took the two injured children to the George Town Hospital,” said Acting Inspector Jason Jones, per The Mercury

Tragically, the 3yo boy could not be saved, dying a short time later.

The 4yo was taken to Launceston General Hospital, suffering minor injuries.

“We believe the female driver was the mother of the two children,” Inspector Jones continued. “She has been sedated and was also taken to the Launceston General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

“This incident will understandably have an impact on the local community, and our thoughts are with those affected,” Inspector Jones told reporters.

It’s not known what caused the crash or if the children were properly strapped into their seats during the incident,

“At this stage, we’re unsure why the vehicle has left the road and why the vehicle was on the road at that time,” said Inspector Jones.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 131 444.
