Boy killed in early-morning crash

Friday March 22, 2.15pm: More details have emerged surrounding the death of a three-year-old boy who was killed in a single-vehicle crash at Lefroy in the state’s North East in the early hours of Friday morning.

Tasmania Police said the crash was reported just after 1.20am on Bridport Rd.

A 24-year-old woman and a four-year-old girl are reported to have been injured in the crash.

Acting Inspector Jason Jones said the woman was driving west in a black Holden Barina on Bridport Road, between Big Hill Road and Dalrymple Road, when she lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into nearby trees.

“A community member who was not involved in the crash was asked to provide assistance before emergency services arrived and took the two injured children to the George Town Hospital,” Inspector Jones said.

“One of the children, a young boy, was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.

“The other child was then taken to the Launceston General Hospital with minor injuries.

“We believe the female driver was the mother of the two children. She has been sedated and was also taken to the Launceston General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Inspector Jones said police were continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

“At this stage we’re unsure why the vehicle has left the road, and why the vehicle was on the road at that time,” he said.

“Anyone with information is encouraged to contact us on 131 444, or Crime Stoppers Tasmania at crimestopperstas.com.au.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

Earlier: A young boy has died after a single-vehicle crash at Lefroy in the state’s North East in the early hours of Friday morning.

Tasmania Police said the crash was reported just after 1:20am on Bridport Rd.

A woman is reported to have been injured in the crash.

Crash investigators remain at the scene and police urged motorists to avoid the Bridport Road, Lefroy area. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Truck collides with car blocking a lane of traffic

3pm: Emergency services in the state’s North-West remain busy following another crash.

A truck and car have reportedly collided on Massy-Greene Dr, South Burnie.

Officers say no serious injuries have been reported at this stage.

The incident has reduced the road to one lane of traffic westbound heading into Burnie.

Man dies from motorbike crash injuries two months on

10.43am: Police have confirmed a 36-year-old Glenorchy man has died following a crash on January 16.

On that day, around 8.15pm emergency services rushed to a two-vehicle crash involving a black Suzuki GSXR and a silver Holden Captiva at the intersection of Brooker Ave and Brisbane St in Hobart.

Officers confirmed the 36-year-old man who was riding the motorbike sadly died on March 16 at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Rescue chopper deployed for injured motorcyclist

Updated: 12.35pm: The motorbike rider and pillion passenger were transported to hospital with reportedly non-life-threatening injuries.

Anthony Rd, West Coast is now clear from the earlier crash.

10.03am: Emergency services have rushed to assist an injured motorcyclist after a crash on a winding West Coast road this morning.

Officers report the extent of injuries were unknown however the Westpac Rescue Helicopter had been deployed to the scene of the incident on Anthony Rd, West Coast.

Motorists in the area have been asked to drive with caution and reduce their speed.

Two crashes in North-West Tasmania

9.31: Police say the truck crash at Bollard Dr, Burnie has now been cleared.

9.22am: One person has been taken to the North West Regional Hospital for assessment after a single vehicle crash on the Ridley Highway, Romaine.

Police say the crash has now been cleared.

8.40am: Emergency services have been kept busy this morning following reports of two separate crashes near Burnie.

Authorities were alerted to a single vehicle crash on Ridgley Hwy, Romaine at 8.18am.

Motorists have been urged to use West Mooreville Rd until the crash is cleared.

Police say injuries are unknown at this stage.

Meanwhile a truck jackknifed and spilt fuel at Bollard Dr, Burnie at 8.30am.

Motorists have been urged to remain clear of the area with no injuries reported.

Police report seizing gel blaster, ammunition, cannabis in ute

March 19, 6am: A police hunt for an alleged armed offender has resulted in the two occupants of a white Holden Rodeo utility being charged with multiple offences, officers report.

Police say they responded to reports of an unfolding burglary at a Mowbray residence in Joffre St, where a person was suspected to be possibly armed.

Police resources were reportedly deployed to the scene where a white Holden Rodeo utility was found.

Officers allege a number of items were seized including a gel blaster and a quantity of firearms ammunition and cannabis.

The two occupants of the ute, a 41-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman were arrested at the scene, police say.

They were charged with aggravated burglary, stealing and firearm offences with the man scheduled to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court today.

Investigations are continuing and police believe two more people are involved in the incident.

Police hunt for an allegedly armed person of interest

5.17pm: Police suspect an alleged offender they are searching for could be armed.

Officers said they’re responding to an isolated incident and are hunting for a person of interest in the vicinity of the East Tamar Highway, Haig St and Joffre St, Mowbray.

Police said they are investigating reports that the alleged offender may possibly be armed.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area until further notice.

Anyone with information is requested to contact police on 131 444.

Pedestrian injured after crash with car on Midland Highway

Updated 4.46pm: Police remain on the scene where a pedestrian was injured after a crash involving a car on the Midland Hwy, Breadalbane.

Officers report the male pedestrian suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is receiving medical assistance.

They say the driver of the vehicle is being taken to the Launceston General Hospital for routine testing and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Initial 3.48pm: Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a crash involving a car and pedestrian on the Midland Highway at Breadalbane, south of Launceston.

Police say the extent of injuries are unknown.

Motorists have been warned to expect delays.

Updated 4.30pm: The crash has been cleared.

Earlier 3.50pm: Police say no serious injuries have been reported after a crash on Strickland Ave, South Hobart.

Emergency services remain at the scene with one lane of Strickland Ave still closed.

March 18, 2.53pm: Injuries have been reported at a crash on Strickland Ave, South Hobart this afternoon.

Police say the extent of those injuries are unknown at this stage.

Emergency services are on the scene.

The incident has blocked Strickland Ave at number 76, past the Cascade Brewery.

CBD traffic havoc after crash near major city intersection

Updated March 18, 1.08pm: The crash has now been cleared with no injuries reported.

Initial 12.15pm: A crash has backed up traffic at a key city intersection just after midday.

Emergency services are responding to the incident on the corner of Collins and Elizabeth Sts, Hobart.

At this stage, no injuries have been reported.

Police confirmed traffic has been affected and asked motorists to avoid the scene until it’s cleared.

Motorcyclist injured after crashing at Midland Highway intersection

March 17, 2.21pm: A motorcyclists is reportedly injured after a single vehicle motorcycle crash on Roseneath Rd, Ross at the intersection of the Midland Highway.

Police and emergency services were called out to the incident about 2.20pm this afternoon.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
