'I'm sure my two-year-old broke her leg at childcare, but they deny anything happened'

Cairns mum Jade firmly believes her daughter's leg was broken at her childcare centre last weekend, but the centre firmly believes an investigation will clear them and their staff of any wrongdoing.

When Aussie mum Jade dropped her two daughters off at their childcare centre in Far North Queensland last Thursday, she expected to pick up two happy girls later that afternoon.

Unfortunately, the Cairns mum could see her daughter Rhylee was in immense pain when she picked her up at 2.30pm, and doctors later confirmed the two-year-old had broken her leg.

The Cairns Post reports doctors told Jade her daughter had likely been “in extreme pain” for the majority of the day.

“This would have been ‘quite a fall’ to do this,” she told the Post.

“(The staff) weren’t sure why Rhylee had been upset all day. She wouldn’t stop crying even with me holding her. I was getting stressed.

“She wouldn’t let me put her down … she screamed all the way home.”

Mum sure injury happened at childcare

The Cairns Post reports Rhylee, who lives with autism, is seen in photographs jumping on a trampoline at the childcare about 8am, and then being comforted by her sister Maddy in another photo about 1pm.

Kidspot is not suggesting any wrongdoing from the childcare centre, and it is now known when or how Rhylee’s leg fracture happened.

Jade called an ambulance about 3pm which took Rhylee to Cairns Hospital. X-Ray images showed Rhylee had fractured the lower part of her left tibia.

"The incident as alleged simply did not occur"

A spokesperson from the childcare centre, who Kidspot will not name, denied the allegations in a statement to the Cairns Post.

“The incident as alleged simply did not occur,” they said.

“We did not become aware of the allegation until five days later when social media posts made by the child’s mother were brought to our attention.

“At this point in time we still have not received any direct communication from the child’s family.

“We immediately self-reported the allegation to the Department of Education for the department’s investigation.”

Childcare centre "confident" of being cleared by investigation

The centre spokesperson said all staff had provided statements that refute any allegations Rhylee suffered harm while in their care.

“We have every confidence the department’s investigation process will clear both the centre and our staff of any wrongdoing or neglect,” they said.

A spokesperson from the Department of Education confirmed they had received a complaint from Jade about the alleged incident.

“As the Early Childhood Regulatory Authority, the department places the highest priority on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children attending these services,” they said.

“The ECRA is actively investigating this incident to establish the relevant facts and address any immediate risks.”
