However, Antonia felt the wrath of her family after sharing the recipe with a friend.

“A few weeks ago my best friend of 15 years was feeling down because she was missing her mother who passed away recently,” she said.

“To cheer her up, I decided to cook her my grandma’s special pasta. She loved it so much that she asked for the recipe.

“Seeing how it brightened her day, I decided to share it but asked her to promise to keep it a secret.”

"My grandma is heartbroken"

Antonia’s seemingly good deed would soon backfire as her friend took to social media to brag about her friend’s pasta.

“I found out she’d shared a photo of the pasta on her social media mentioning how it was made with a ‘secret family recipe’ from her best friend,” she said.

“My cousin saw the post and immediately figured out I had shared our grandma’s sacred recipe. She was livid and told the entire family.”

That’s when her family, who Antonia described as “furious”, started dishing out consequences for her food faux pas.

“My grandma is heartbroken that I gave away something she considers a core part of our family heritage,” she said.

“They have a big family dinner planned next week, and I received a call from my uncle telling me that I am not welcome to join.

“They say I betrayed the family trust over something as important as our shared history and culture.

“I argued that it was just a recipe and that sharing it with my closest friend, in a time when she needed comfort, was a gesture of love and support.

“I never thought it would escalate to this level of family drama.”

"It was never yours to give away"

Antonia took to popular internet forum Reddit with her story, and people were quick to throw their support behind her family.

“It’s not about the recipe itself, it’s about your family’s feelings of trust, sharing and togetherness, and you violated all of that,” one person wrote. “You knew how important that was to your grandmother and the rest of your family and you completely disregarded their feelings.”

“It was never yours to give away,” another person wrote. “Everyone else in your family respected your grandma enough to not do what you did.

“You think it’s ‘just a recipe’, but to your grandmother, it’s obviously more than that.

“You’re not wrong for cooking it for your friend, that was a nice gesture, but when she asked for the recipe, you could’ve said it was your grandma’s and you didn’t feel as though you could give it.”

"Let's appreciate the art and hard work of crafting a personal recipe"

Another person said Antonia’s story “bugged” her.

“I put a lot of time and energy into making my recipes what they are,” they wrote. “I research, I experiment, and I make things over and over until I feel like they are right.

“Sometimes it’s hard to flippantly hand over something I have really poured a ton of heart into.

“Yes, good food is meant to be shared, but let’s also appreciate the art and hard work that it takes to craft a personal recipe.”

However, others said Antonia’s family was over-reacting.

“I’ve never understood this need for secrecy over food recipes,” one person wrote.

“Whenever someone tells me they love something I’ve cooked I’m more than happy to share the recipe.”
