‘I found out my husband was having an affair with another woman … my mother’

“It's sadistic. It's a betrayal of astronomical proportions. They must be beyond disturbed.” 

No marriage is perfect, but *Bethany and *Ian’s would come pretty close.

They had everything in life: a beautiful house, they rarely argued, had four kids aged between 22 and five, and another on the way; she was seven months pregnant with their fifth and final child.  

As childhood sweethearts, Bethany and Ian only had eyes for each other and loved every second of their lives together. 

That’s what Bethany thought, anyway.

Woman catches husband having an affair with her mother

The couple welcomed their first child when they were only 17, moving into Bethany’s parents’ house while they prepared for the baby. 

More than 22 years had passed, and the couple had moved to Bethany’s late grandfather’s cottage, located next door to her parents. 

On New Year’s Eve a few years ago, she recalled, Bethany returned early from a girls’ trip, and proceeded to take her belongings upstairs. 

Being seven months pregnant, she longed for her own bed and to feel comfortable again. 

However, as she opened the door, she was mortified to find her husband and her mother, Candace, having sex on the bed.

Screaming in shock, Bethany and her eldest daughter, who was “unfortunately also home” at the time, saw Candace “run out of our house” butt-naked with a sheet wrapped around her. 

Bethany demanded Ian to confess the truth about the situation, and he immediately broke down. 

“He told me that my mum seduced him when we were 18 and living in their house,” she said in the Reddit post. 

He explained he was angry about a fight he had with Bethany and turned to Candace for comfort. She then “seduced” him, sparking a two-decade-long affair. 

“He loved it and kept pursuing her afterwards,” she said. 

“He said he would’ve divorced me, but he knew he would’ve been cut off from my mum. So I was basically a placeholder.”

Then, a terrible thought ran through her head. 

See, Bethany was one of six siblings, aged between 42 and 18; her three youngest brothers were twins, aged 20, and an 18yo, which raised some serious red flags. 

“I ran the maths and was horrified,” she said. “Because the timeline meant my twin brothers and youngest brother could be my husband’s.”

She called her dad, Jack*, and demanded he come over, but she made sure not to let Candace follow along. 

“I made my husband confess and my dad was devastated,” she said. “He and my mum were high school sweethearts, too.” Shortly after breaking the news, the family could hear Candace’s screams coming from next door. 

Bethany also called her sister and confessed the entire saga. The duo then decided to throw a party for the family, including Ian’s relatives, just so they could spill the secret.

While the adults in the family were now aware of Ian and Celeste’s disgraceful actions, nine of the children, including Bethany and Ian’s youngest kids, had a clue about the affair. 

Before Bethany and her dad, Jack, made any further moves with their marriage, they had to confirm one thing: were Jack and Candace’s three youngest children even his? 

He told his daughter he wouldn't make a move on his marriage with Candace until a DNA test was performed. 

“The twins are my husband’s biological children,” she said, defeated. 

Since the news broke within the family, it quickly travelled through the grapevine. Suddenly, the whole town knew about Ian sleeping with his wife’s mother, and the community was furious. 

Then the backlash started. 

While the majority of her family is on Bethany’s side, Ian’s family aren’t, neither is her younger sister or three youngest brothers. 

“They all say I’m an a**hole for dropping this publicly,” she said. 

The local church where Candace worked as a children’s pastor removed her from service, prompting her to scold Bethany for “ruining her reputation and life.” 

Bethany pushed past the feelings of resentment and initiated a divorce from Ian. 

“My husband is appalled and furious that I proved he actually is about to have seven kids, instead of five, that I'm going to be taking half his business away from him,” she said. 

“I despise my ex with everything within me now, as he was f**king both my mum and me in some instances coming to our bed minutes later,” she said. 

“He got my mother pregnant less than a week after getting me pregnant and while I thought it was so cute and fun that I shared a pregnancy experience with my mom, she was carrying my children's half-siblings.”

“Ruin. His. Life.”

Shockwaves were sent throughout the Reddit community, horrified by what they’d just read. 

“That is truly awful and vile,” read a comment. 

“Your husband is just a stupid POS but your mother.... How could she do this to you.” asked another. 

“For over 20 years! Let you live and be intimate with a man based on the deceit that she created. It's sadistic. It's a betrayal of astronomical proportions. She must be beyond disturbed.”

“Bethany, you are one tough cookie!” someone comforted. “You didn’t deserve that and you took it easy on them as far as I’m concerned.”

“Ruin. His. Life,” wrote a fourth.
