‘He was mocking my voice on our date… and on Friday night it got even worse’

Ellie revealed that Ben’s cruel behaviour on MAFS persisted even after he apologised and it made us realise, there's a fine line between enjoying reality TV and encouraging abuse.

MAFS 2024: Party girl bride stuns with X-rated antics

“I’m thinking you don’t want to be with Ellie. You’ve got to come clean with me: do you really want to be here?” Married At First Sight expert John Aiken demanded of Ben on tonight's show.

If John was doubting Ben, it’s not a surprise; the groom was being downright mean to his bride.

Just before John’s question, Ellie explained what had happened in the past week on camera and then off.

“This week has been like a roller coaster… I was feeling very hurt from a night with Ben,” she said.

“We went on a date night and during the date he began to mock me in a high-pitched voice, he said I was a bit naïve and silly.”

Ellie stood up for herself and left, and when Ben arrived home at their apartment, he apologised.

“It was another story on Friday night,” Ellie said. “He told me I wasn’t his match. I was absolutely horrified and just so hurt because I’d let down my walls, I put my heart on the line and to hear that, I wondered, how is this relationship going to continue?”

Ellie, we reckon it shouldn’t continue.

Ben and Ellie are playing out the abuser-abused relationship on MAFS

It’s pretty clear to us, this match is bad news. If Ben can’t keep his mean thoughts to himself when he’s supposed to be trying to win Ellie’s heart, what’s he going to be like when she’s invested, when they’re actually married, when they have kids?

His excuse for his behaviour was pretty pathetic.

“I dunno, it just came out,” he responded when questioned about his words. “I was in this cloud, the pressure of the experiment getting to me. I was just wanting to get out.”

But when it came down to it, Ben and Ellie both decided to stay. Ben was contrite and that was enough for Ellie.

“I regret [what I said] so much. I’d do anything not to have done that,” he said

MAFS Andrea and Lauren warn Ellie

Andrea wasn’t buying it. Having escaped her own abusive, dysfunctional relationship before she was matched with Richard on the show, she saw right through Ben.

“I’m feeling for you right now Ellie. I’ve got tears in my eyes,” she said to the couple as they sat on the couch.

“I’ve been with someone and have been treated the way you have. It’s nothing to do with you. Quite often these people are insecure, and they make you feel bad about yourself to make themselves feel better.

“I’m sorry Ben, I don’t know you, but that’s the vibe I’m getting.”

Lauren then spoke up, seemingly to apologise, but also to delve into the topic of children.

“I’m sorry I dragged you over the coals at dinner,” she said. “I just know Ellie wants to have children.”

Ben had flip-flopped on the issue of children, and no one in the room seemed convinced he was keen to be a dad.

Ben came up with what he thought was a good argument, but to everyone but Ellie, the reasoning was flimsy.

“During the week I was having a moment talking to my sister-in-law and I could hear my niece and nephew arguing in the background,” Ben explained. “There was no magic moment, I just remember thinking, ‘I’m ready for this. Ready for that next stage’.”

Lauren didn’t buy it, but that didn’t matter because Ellie did.

Ben and Ellie might be willing to keep trying, and they might be hopeful for their future. But we think there’s an abusive relationship unfolding before our eyes.
