Macca’s worker reveals key Big Mac ingredient stores use

The employee revealed the key ingredient that goes into the popular burger – and it’s probably why your at-home attempts taste nothing like the real thing.

Macca's worker reveals Big Mac secret

Ever wondered why your at-home attempt at a Big Mac didn’t taste quite the same as the Macca’s version?

Well one Macca’s employee has revealed on TikTok the food item that goes into the famous sauce, leaving customers stunned.

In a now-deleted TikTok, @maccas_myths shared that the fast food chain used two types of onions, one of which was used in its burgers for flavouring.

“At Macca’s, we have two types of onions,” they said.

“Large onions which have been cut up and dehydrated onions which are put it water overnight.”

After soaking them overnight the dehydrated onions are put in shakers and used in the chain’s Big Macs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers, Daily Mail Australia reports.

Not only do dehydrated onions last longer, but they also have a stronger flavour — something Macca’s fans claimed was what made the restaurant’s burgers taste so good.

“Those dehydrated onions hit differently,” one person wrote, while another said: “I rehydrate onion flakes for my burgers at home because my kids say it tastes just like McDonald’s.”

It’s not the first time a Macca’s worker has revealed the fast food chain uses dehydrated onions.

Last year Canadian employee @austin.martinn shared how their store used a massive packet which equalled to 385 servings.

Workers empty the dried onions into a tub and add cool tap water, allowing the onions to soak for an hour.

Then any excess water is drained and the onions go to the burger assembly area where they are added to customer orders.

The video, which has been viewed almost 400,000 times, racked up hundreds of comments from people stunned to find out where their Macca’s onion really comes from.

“Did not know onions could be dried like that. That’s crazy,” one person commented, while another added: “I never knew this OMG.”

“I don’t care,” one defiant Macca’s fan wrote. “I love those onions and want to buy some of those packs to make them at home.”

The video even inspired jealously in one rival fast food worker who commented: “And here I am at subway, CRYING, slicing onions at 6am!!!”
