TikTok video reveals truth behind favourite McDonald’s burger ingredient

Like the pickle or cheese slice our burgers wouldn’t be complete without this ingredient – but you might be surprised to know where it comes from.

Where Macca's gets its onions

It’s as crucial to a Macca’s cheeseburger as the, well, cheese is, but you might be surprised to find out exactly where the fast food chain’s onions come from.

In a video shared to TikTok by Canadian McDonald’s worker @austin.martinn, he reveals how the restaurant uses dehydrated onions which comes in a massive packet equal to 385 servings.

Workers empty the dried onions into a tub and add cool tap water, allowing the onions to soak for an hour.

Then any excess water is drained and the onions go to the burger assembly area where they are added to customer orders.

The video, which has been viewed almost 400,000 times, has racked up hundreds of comments from people stunned to find out where their Macca’s onion really comes from.

“Did not know onions could be dried like that. That’s crazy,” one person commented, while another added: “I never knew this OMG.”

“I don't care,” one defiant Macca’s fan wrote. “I love those onions and want to buy some of those packs to make them at home.”

The video even inspired jealously in one rival fast food worker who commented: “And here I am at subway, CRYING, slicing onions at 6am!!!”

It’s unclear if Macca’s uses dehydrated onions in its Australian fast food joints and news.com.au has contacted the company for comment.

Another one of @austin.martinn’s videos showing how the eggs for Macca’s McMuffins were made and has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.

The strangely hypnotic clip shows how eggs are cracked into rings before the yolks are all individually broken and a machine is pressed down on top of the eggs to cook them.

People labelled the video “actually impressive” as one person had previously confirmed it “came in frozen packets”.

“I refuse to believe they use real eggs,” one commented, while another person added, “Bruh is that why there’s always shells in my egg mcmuffin.”

@austin.martinn isn’t the only Macca’s worker to go viral for sharing behind-the-scenes details about the fast food chain.

New York makeup artist Dessy Joseph, who worked at McDonald’s from 2013 to 2014, has had tens of millions of views on more than 30 videos about her time working for the golden arches.

Here’s some of her best advice:

Don’t order a caramel sundae: Dessy claims that different sundae sauces were stored in “metal bins” at the base of the machine which would cause the caramel to go off.

“The machine gets hot, it heats up when it’s working and condensation builds. Condensation plus tight closed spaces equals mould,” she said.

“There was plenty of occasions where we would open the thingy and there’d be mould in it. “They’d pour the new hot fudge or caramel or whatever on top of the old mouldy one and call it a day.”

Always order to go: You should never request your meal as dine-in because of the trays, Dessy said.

“I’ve seen people do some disgusting things with the to stay trays – I’m talking blowing straight-up boogers into the trays,” she claimed.

“And to clean the trays we just have a bucket and a rag and we just use that bucket all day. So no, it wasn’t really properly cleaned, disinfected … order to go and just rip the bag open to use as a tray.”

Trick to getting a discount: According to Dessy, there is an easy way to get a discount on your order by using one word.

For example, if you were ordering a hot cakes breakfast you should say “sub” if you wanted to add one item and take another away.

“Most of you would say no hash browns, but I want extra bacon. The person will remove the hash browns but add the extra bacon and you just spent two dollars for no reason,” she explained.

“Instead use the word sub say ‘no hash brown sub bacon’. It reminds the cashier to press the sub button and you won’t be charged extra.”
