Aldi’s $7 vegan ‘turkey roast’ has divided customers

A new product from Aldi’s festive range has received mixed reviews from shoppers as some say it’s “so good” while others state “never again”.

Shoppers froth over new $10 Aldi ‘dupe’

Supermarkets around the country are dropping their Christmas range in the lead up to the festive season – but not every item has been universally welcomed.

The latest off-the-shelf meal to gain attention has been Aldi’s new Earth Grown Vegan No Turkey Roast, which arrived in stores on October 26.

The item, which is just $6.99, weighs 350 grams and features a cranberry, apricot and pumpkin seed stuffing, wrapped in a soy and tofu coating with a BBQ flavour glaze.

Many were eager to try the item, designed for two, with several people having picked up more than one.

“Just picked up 3 from Golden Grove. Perfect size for 2 I’d think. Looks so good,” one person said.

Another added: “Ooh if anyone tries this, please let me know what you think.”

But reviews from people who have tried the vegan roast have started trickling in and they are mixed, to put it kindly.

One said: “We had this tonight. We didn’t add any oil. It turned out fairly rubbery and chewy on the outside and can’t complain about the taste – there wasn’t any.

“I would never eat this again, even if someone paid me too.”

Another said: “Very disappointing but my husband quite enjoyed it.”

One woman said she was a huge fan and that with all the trimmings the serving size could extend beyond just a couple of diners.

“It is meant to serve 2 but if you did it with all the trimmings, it would easily feed 3-4 people in my opinion,” the woman said.

“I am not a huge ‘mock meat’ fan but this was nice. I basted it with some cranberry sauce and orange juice.

“I think I shall do my own Xmas roast but for something different and for the price, I would say give it a go.”

Others said the dish was average and some claimed that not following the cooking instructions to a tee could account for many of the bad experiences.

One said: “I think for the price it’s worth buying to try. It’s a good size if you’re the only vegan in the village at Christmas time. I would definitely add a glaze of gravy because it is very bland.”

Supermarket Coles also launched 25 vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free products including I’m Free From Chocolate Pudding and a Nature’s Kitchen plant-based Christmas ham-style roast.
