What started out as a way for Toowoomba homeschool kids to meet and play music together, has turned into a some 50-strong orchestra which welcomes youth from the ages of 10 and up from schools across the Toowoomba region.
Conductor Tim Gray started the orchestra not just to give kids in Toowoomba a chance to play music together, but to also bring a bit of fun and liveliness to the pieces they play.
“For me it’s about getting to play the music that they know,” he said.
“Even when you announce we’re going to do this song, there’s a there’s a little cheer and a ‘yeah’.
“Quite often they get to play music that they wouldn’t otherwise in their school band.”
Mr Gray said the most rewarding thing for him was just watching the friendships they make over time.
First violinists Mikaela Suthers, Gabby Pellow, Ella Peters, and Amelia Tranter have been part of the orchestra for a number of years now and have since become a group of close friends.
While they spent their last few years in high school attending practice, and as they graduated and went on to university, they’ve found themselves still coming back every week.
They all agreed the best thing about coming to orchestra practice was each other, along with getting to play more fun, well-known music.
Every Monday the players meet at Toowoomba City Church and rehearse, and this Monday, they are on their final rehearsal before they perform on the weekend.
This Saturday, May 25, the TRYO will perform a collection of music from spy-themed movies, such as Johnny English, Pink Panther, and James Bond at Toowoomba City Church on Neil St.
