American indie-pop singer Sky Ferreira’s headlining show at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday night left fans puzzled, the star arriving on stage 80 minutes late – then performing the concert cloaked in darkness.

Ferreira, 31, was headlining the Vivid Festival, performing songs from her acclaimed sole album, 2013’s Night Time, My Time.

The show was scheduled to begin at 7.30pm on Sunday night – but more than an hour later, fans took to social media to complain there was still no sign of the singer.

“Sky ferreira late by 1 hr 10 mins so far,” one fan tweeted.

When she did eventually arrive on stage, Ferreira could barely be seen, footage from the concert showing her as just a shadow on a stage bathed in dim blue light.

“Sky Ferreira showed up 80 mins late to her Sydney gig and is performing the whole show in the dark with her back turned the crowd, who’s surprised?” one fan tweeted of the show.

“Sky Ferreira was almost two hours late but it was worth the wait to finally see her live,” another fan posted to TikTok.

According to Setlist FM, Ferreira eventually started the show at 8.50pm and performed 16 songs – four less than were on her setlist, which had been spotted by fans.

Ferreira has been touring around the US and Europe in recent weeks, with concertgoers reporting similar issues at other shows.

Ferreira’s last show before she came to Australia was at LA’s Wiltern Theatre on May 25. One fan in attendance called that gig a “beautiful disaster. 2 hours late. Sound and lighting issues the whole time. Honestly respect her for not giving up and playing until midnight. Never experienced anything like that before.”

And weeks earlier, Ferreira’s Manchester concert made headlines in the UK after it was dubbed the “Willy Wonka experience of gigs”, some fans fuming over the star’s lateness and the chaotic nature of the show.

But Ferreira hit back at that report, writing on social media that “the narrative and negativity I constantly receive online doesn’t add up. It was completely different IRL.” She finished with a plea for those attending her concerts to “stop being weird and throw away your phones.”

Ferreira’s Australian tour continues with shows in Melbourne on Tuesday and Brisbane on Wednesday.
