In workshops and sheds across the Darlings Downs, dozens of DIY speed demons are tinkering away, refining their machines ahead of the region’s newest race day.
The Greenmount Billy Kart Challenge is set to be held in the sleeping country town on November 23, giving races just three weeks to make sure their rides are up to scratch.
Terry Bellette and Jason Iacono from the Sowerby’s Towing team placed third overall in the inaugural race last year and hoped to better that result.
“It is great entertainment, there are plenty of thrills and spills and it raises money for a good cause,” Mr Iacono said.
On race day, the organisers line Greenmount’s main street with hay bales before dozens of entrants compete in knockout races before a winner is crowned.
The Get Chopped Pub serves as a focal point while the volunteers from the Greenmount State School host a barbecue to raise money for its P&C committee.
But for Mr Iacono and his team, the journey to the races is a big part of the fun as they design the best racer possible.
“Terry, I and the boys are building the kart, whenever we get a bit of time free we do a bit of tinkering,”
“The new carbon fibre wheels, a quick release steering wheel and high pressure tires, so it has the right amount of friction on the roads.”
The metal frame has been welding together, wrapped in tin sheeting and will be coated in branding advertising the towing business.
“Hopefully it stays together and does not break,” Mr Iacono said.
There is still time to enter the race. To nominate visit the Greenmount Billy Kart Challenge Facebook page or call into the Get Chopped Pub.
