A small town may have uncovered the Toowoomba region’s newest tourism event, after the inaugural Greenmount Billy Cart Challenge drew hundreds of onlookers and participants from across Queensland.
Organisers have estimated more than 800 people braved the inclement weather on Saturday to watch 65 participants tackle the main street of Greenmount.
Drivers delivered an incredible array of themed billy carts, including some that cost thousands of dollars to build.
The event was created by Get Chopped Community Events, with president Tricia Chant saying it was an attempt to boost the town’s tourism.
“We were having a couple of drinks, we thought what could be brought to Greenmount,” she said.
“I knew the owners of the pub, and I am involved with the Leyburn Sprints so (the committee) asked me to be a part of it.
“It’s been a long time coming, a good 12 months in the planning.”
Ms Chant said she was ironically happy the rain drove some people away considering the significant take-up for the event in its first year.
“Even with the rain we were overwhelmed by the crowds and participants,” she said.
“There were 65 participants, from as far as the Gold Coast and Brisbane — we even had people come up from New South Wales.
“We were thankful it was ordinary weather because weren’t expecting these numbers.
“It’s helped us now, there are improvements to be made, and we are really excited to run it again.
Ms Chant said a date would be set in November next year.
She also praised the Toowoomba Regional Council’s support for the event.
