THE business that built Wellcamp airport has put its hand up to build Sydney's much-anticipated second airport.

Wagners chairman John Wagner told The Chronicle that his family harboured ambitions to build the proposed airport at Badgerys Creek.

Mr Wagner said the construction of Wellcamp Airport, which was built in just 18 months, showed Wagners was well equipped to build Sydney's second airport.

"I think we're the best placed company in the country - given that we're the only business that's built an airport from scratch in 50 years - to build Badgerys Creek," he said.

"There's no reason that we can't take a lead role in that . . . we've done it here."

"This is Badgerys Creek except it's a bit bigger terminal."

He said Wagners could do a better job building the airport than any government.

"It's a long way down the track," he said.

"We're happy to tender for it when it comes up.

"We have expertise that we need to construct a world-class facility which we've done here very successfully in record time."

The proposed new airport for western Sydney came a step closer this week after Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss announced he had lodged a referral for the environmental impact statement with Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt.

"The longer-term vision for the ultimate airport layout would operate with two parallel runways of up to 4000 metres in length," he said.

Wellcamp Airport has one runway which is 2.87km long.
