WAGNERS has confirmed it will make a bid to build the Western Sydney Airport, flagging its intentions with Acting Prime Minister Michael McCormack in Toowoomba yesterday.
In a private meeting with Mr McCormack before he flew from the Wagners-built Wellcamp Airport, company CEO Cameron Coleman confirmed the Toowoomba construction giant would lodge an Expression of Interest in building the major infrastructure project.
Mr Coleman said Wagners had partnered with construction firm WBHO and would lodge the EOI together "to be considered as one of the consortiums to then go through to the bid process.
"It's early stages and there's quite a process to go through before the successful companies are chosen to move on to the bid process," he said.
"We (Wagners) feel that the experience gained through the construction of the Wellcamp Airport positions us to offer a good solution to the Western Sydney Airport.
"We've got a team of Australian companies that are well-qualified to play a role in this project."
It ends months of speculation Wagners would vie for the project after company co-founder John Wagner declared the Toowoomba business could build Badgerys Creek quicker and cheaper.
Wellcamp Airport was built in 19 months, and Mr Coleman said Wagners had followed the Western Sydney project for a "number of years".
"Since the successful completion of the Wellcamp Airport, many airport opportunities have presented themselves to Wagners," he said.
"It's a fantastic opportunity for an Australian company."
Mr Coleman said the EOI was likely to be lodged in the next month.
