After nearly five years in operation, a large restaurant inside Grand Central Shopping has shut its doors suddenly. Here is what the company said.

A longstanding restaurant inside Toowoomba’s Grand Central Shopping Centre has closed suddenly, much to the shock of many patrons.

The Bavarian, which opened its Garden City location on the top floor of the centre in 2018, installed a sign in the window earlier this week announcing that it was shut.

The restaurant, part of a chain of Bavarians across Australia, specialised in German-style food and beers.

“We want to take this chance to say ‘dankeschon’ for your continued support,” the sign said.

“We’ve loved being able to give you all a taste of Bavaria itself.

“Unfortunately, from March 13, our doors here will shut for good.

“But don’t worry: if you’re looking to have another delicious Bavarian experience, we have several more restaurants around Queensland.”

The Bavarian was among the first restaurants to open inside Grand Central after its massive 2017 extension, promising 17 German beers on tap and a number of items like pork knuckle, loaded schnitzels and speciality signature schnapps.

While many residents were “shocked” by the news, others said they were not surprised to hear of the closure.

A spokeswoman for Grand Central did not comment on the closure but said it had received demand for retail space.

“Out of respect for all our retailers, we do not discuss specific elements of leases,” she said.

“We continue to experience strong demand for retail space, and the centre remains committed to ensuring our retail offer evolves with the demands of our region.”
