A RIVAL low-carbon building product to Wagners' earth-friendly concrete has been introduced to the Toowoomba market.
Competitor Boral, which this week opened a $13 million asphalt batching plant in Wellcamp, also revealed it had been approved to start selling its Envisia concrete for residents, businesses and infrastructure projects.
While both products used less carbon while being made, Boral and Wagners have chosen different methods to achieve it.
Boral state executive manager Simon Jeffrey said rather than using a geo-polymer to bind the materials like with Wagners, the company used a mixture of slag and cement to reduce carbon emissions.
"We believe we're on top of the game and our carbon credentials are bench-marked against the best. It's an extremely safe product to use," he said.
"We've got Transport and Main Roads approval and the carbon credentials are resonating with our clients and they're demanding this product.
"The research we've done and studies we've got show our carbon credentials are equally as good.
"If you're doing something at home and you'd like Envisia concrete, we'd be happy to send it out."
According to research completed by Monash University in 2007, 40MPa-strength Envisia concrete produced about 220kg of carbon emissions per cubic metre, almost half the emissions from typical concrete.
Wagners declined to provide its carbon-dioxide production from the same strength of EFC, but listed on its website that "every cubic metre of 40 MPa EFC saves 220kg of CO2 emissions".
Mr Jeffrey said the concrete mix was used to build the new asphalt plant.
"It gave us an opportunity here to put the mix into this development," he said.
