An international car rental chain has opened its new Toowoomba location at one of the city’s most prominent corners, with the full refurbishment to be completed within months.
Avis was announced last year as the tenant to take over the corner of James and Hume Streets, which had been the home of Sizzler for years before the franchise folded in November 2020.
Hodge Real Estate sold the property to new investors last year for $4.5m.
A spokeswoman for Avis said the company was already employing dozens of people as it continued the fit-out.
“The Avis Toowoomba site is now open and will be fully complete by June 2022,” the statement said.
“There will be a total of 30 people employed at the new Avis Toowoomba location which includes front and back-office staff.
“Avis Toowoomba provides a range of vehicles for every type of rental need as our customers span several industries including furniture removal, freight and logistics, oil and gas, business travel and tourism.”
Avis has also lodged plans with the Toowoomba Regional Council to build a new transport depot on Boundary Street in Torrington.
According to the development application by Property Projects Australia, the new depot will house Avis vehicles when not required.
The proposal includes a 600 sqm shed, dedicated wash bay and eight car parks.
