The Darling Downs and wider southwest Queensland will play a crucial role in getting small businesses back on their feet after a devastating 12 months for countless hallmark industries in the region.

In light of Small Business Month in May, and with the theme “Bounce Back Better” in mind, towns across the region have pledged to support their local businesses in different ways.

Goondiwindi will play host to a Regional Women in Business Long Lunch, bringing together women from across southwest Queensland to network.

Further west, the St George Chamber of Commerce will work collaboratively with business owners to capitalise on major tourism events in the town throughout the remainder of this year.

Among the conferences, expos, seminars, workshops, forums, webinars and trade shows, throughout the state there are also events for targeted groups, such as rural and regional Queensland and female small business owners.

Employment and Small Business Minister Di Farmer said the month-long celebration of businesses would focus on fast-tracking business recovery, and helping business owners and employees feel supported.

“Our Small Business Roadshows, which wrapped up in March, provided direct feedback from small businesses who were eager to tell us what they needed to recover from the past 18 months, how to create jobs and keep our communities strong,” she said.

“Following on from their recommendations, the Palaszczuk Government is investing more than $100,000 to sponsor these activities, connecting small businesses with the information and support to help them to come back even better.

“Through our new Partnership Program, 17 organisations will host a range of events to help their local small businesses.”

Ms Farmer said the events would focus on the industries that were hit the hardest during the pandemic, especially arts and tourism.
