Jeff Bezos is believed to be considering selling The Washington Post to smooth the way for a takeover of the US capital’s struggling American football team.

The Amazon founder, who is understood to be worth more than $US120bn ($170bn), bought the newspaper for $US250m 2013 when it was struggling financially.

Mr Bezos, 59, is thought to have long coveted the Washington Commanders, an NFL team with a rich history but a woeful record over recent seasons.

Commanders owner Dan Snyder is believed to have become irritated by coverage in The Washington Post. In particular, there is anger at the way sexual harassment allegations against officials at the Commanders have been reported, the New York Post said.

Mr Bezos met senior Washington Post staff last week, fuelling fears that the paper could be about to hold a fresh round of redundancies.

Mr Bezos, who started Amazon as an online bookstore in 1994, is reported to have told staff that he had no plans to sell the paper, but speculation has increased that the redundancies could be a way of making the newspaper more attractive to investors.

A sale of the newspaper could also be seen as a peace offering to Mr Snyder and a way of smoothing relations before any negotiations over the Washington Commanders.
