Sam Kerr faces London court to contest racially aggravated harassment of police officer
The Matildas captain will face a four day trial, two years after being charged with racially aggravated harassment of a police officer.
Star footballer and Matildas captain Sam Kerr will face a four day trial in a London court this week over an incident which allegedly occurred two years ago.
Ms Kerr will contest the charges of causing a police officer harassment, alarm or distress under Section 4A of the Public Order Act in Twickenham, southwest London on January 30, 2023. If convicted, the maximum penalty is 26 weeks jail.
Ms Kerr, a high profile players with the English super league club Chelsea, has previously pleaded not guilty to the charge which involved an early morning dispute around a taxi fare after a big night of celebrations following a three goal effort against arch rivals Liverpool.
Ms Kerr appeared in court last month when the judge confirmed the trial dates to be from February 3 to 6. This week she is expected to be supported by her partner Kristie Mews and family members from Perth.
The 31 year old player has been out of action with a long term knee injury, missing the Paris Olympics and all of last season’s games.
Despite this Chelsea signed her to a new two year deal and she is expected back in action next month.
The trial will be heard by Justice Peter Lodder KC in Kingston-Upon-Thames Crown Court.
