Donald Trump, Joe Biden brawl again after debate

Donald Trump and Joe Biden are still fighting; Biden calls Trump a ‘national embarrassment’ and Trump says he’s the left’s prisoner.

Trump-Biden debate was 'a cage fight' with little substance

A day after the brawling debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, both candidates continued their attacks with Mr Biden describing the president as a “national embarrassment” and Mr Trump accusing him of being a prisoner of the left.

As millions of Americans digested the unprecedented shouting match of the first debate, the Commission on Presidential Debates said it would change the format for the next two debates to prevent a repeat.

“Last night’s debate made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues,” the CPD said.

Both Mr Trump and Mr Biden repeatedly interrupted the other, making any coherent discussion almost impossible. Mr Biden laid the blame on the president, saying his behaviour was a national embarrassment.

“I kind of thought at one point — maybe I shouldn’t say this — but, the President of the United States conducting himself the way he did, I think it was just a national embarrassment,” Mr Biden said.

“He not only attacked me constantly, but he also attacked the moderator,” he said of Mr Trump during the debate. “I just hope there is a way the commission can control the ability to answer questions without interruptions.”

Mr Trump said he had received “tremendous reviews” about his performance and said he had nailed Mr Biden on the issue of law and order.

“I thought the debate last night was great. We got tremendous reviews on it. We’re hitting what people want -- law and order -- which Biden was unable to even talk about because he’d lose the radical left -- his radical-left followers. I don’t think there’s too many of them left,” the president said.

He also tweeted: “Nobody wants Sleepy Joe as a leader, including the Radical Left (which he lost last night!).”

A series of instant polls found viewers believe Mr Biden performed better in the debate with a CNN poll saying 60 per cent believed Mr Biden “did the best job in the debate” while a CBS poll found 48 per cent believed Mr Biden won the debate compared to 41 per cent for Mr Trump.

Under pressure from Republicans, the president on Thursday (AEST) backtracked from comments he made during the debate which appeared to encourage a Neo-Fascist group called Proud Boys to be ready to attack the left-wing anarchists Antifa.

“Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,” Mr Trump said during the debate.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it was “unacceptable not to condemn white supremacists.” Another Republican Senator Tim Scott, an African American, urged Mr Trump to “correct” his comments.

Mr Trump said later “I don’t know who the Proud Boys are. Whoever they are, they have to stand down. Let law enforcement do their work”.

Mr Trump has criticised Mr Biden for not naming Antifa and other left-wing groups as the prime cause of violent riots in some Americans cities such as Portland in recent months.

The president says the former Vice President is silent about Antifa because he is worried about alienating the “radical left wing” of the Democrat party.

Mr Biden on Thursday denied he was beholden to the left wing of his party, claiming Mr Trump “is trying to run against somebody other than me.”

“I’m not worried about losing the left, right or centre of the party,” Mr Biden said.

Mr Biden also played down concerns that Mr Trump might not leave office if there is a contested result in the November 3 election.

“The American people will decide who the next president of the United States will be, period,” Mr Biden said, adding that Mr Trump “will step down” if he loses the election. “He has no alternative.”

Lara Trump, who is married to Mr Trump’s son Eric, said the president had no choice but to go on the attack during the debate.

“We all know Donald Trump to be a fighter and he had to get out there and he had to fight because unfortunately Joe Biden was telling some very clearly lies about him, about his positions on things, about the job he and his administration have done,” she said.

Democrat Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Mr Trump’s performance was one of “an idiot, full of sound and fury.”

“Last night, President Trump delivered one of the most disgraceful performances at a presidential debate anyone has ever seen, and I don’t mean that from a political perspective,” Senator Schumer said. “I mean it from a human perspective.”

Mr Trump held a campaign rally in Minnesota on Thursday while Mr Biden travelled through the swing states of Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Mr Biden currently holds a 6.5 point lead over the president in national polls.
