Road Test: Master Lock Portable Key Safe

A secure way to store keys when you’re out and about.

What is it? A secure way to store keys when you’re out and about.

Looks like a big padlock. Well, that’s exactly what it is. You lock it onto something secure and immoveable; punching in the four-digit combination opens an internal cavity the size of a matchbox – enough to hold five bare keys.

The downside: The opening switch is small, fiddly and poorly placed – no good for elderly people. Also, my goodness it’s an ugly object.

The upside: It’s not operated via Bluetooth, as some modern key safes are. Imagine the frustration of a glitchy connection, or a dead phone battery, when vital keys are inside. With this, you just need to memorise the four-digit combination.

I worry I won’t be able to. So write it down on a piece of paper, and put it under a flowerpot by the door or in the wheel arch of your car. Thieves will never think to look there.
