The Australian team who created this $200 wine glass say it’s a “groundbreaking design”. What makes it so special?

WHAT IS IT? A $200 wine glass.

WHAAAT? I COULD BUY, LIKE, TEN GOON BOXES OF CHARDONNAY FOR THAT MONEY. Yes, but this product isn’t aimed at your sort, it’s for connoisseurs. It’s a “groundbreaking glass design”, you see.

GO ON... Made of hand-blown crystal, it has a raised hub in the base of the bowl from which angled ridges emanate.

AHH... IT’S SOMETHING TO DO WITH AERATION, RIGHT? Spot on. When you gently swirl the glass (de rigueur for any self-respecting wine wanker) the wine tumbles over the ridges and is aerated.

CLEVER. Yes, the ridges act like “a supercharged decanter” in opening up the wine. It emulates the effect of ageing a wine by up to four years, according to one of the renowned wine house (including Château Pichon Baron and Penfolds) that Melbourne design firm Denver & Liely worked with on this project. There’s an international patent pending.

SOUNDS VERY THOROUGH. I’ll say. It took eight years of research and development! Of course, wine people love a long lunch.
