While most spirits categories have suffered small downturns from pandemic-era highs, tequila remains a powerhouse. This year’s Best Spirits list features two very different agave distillates and excitingly, one is again Australian.
While there’s still enough gin to pour another ocean and fill the Mariana Trench with empties, there is some contraction at the fly-by-night fringe. But the best will thrive, and the Australian gin scene is the most dynamic and innovative on Earth.
Elsewhere, cane spirits continue to build depth and diversity in our rum-loving country, while local whisky has strengthened its claim to sit among the world’s best. Lastly, when the spirit is willing, even ‘Urban Bourbon’ rises to the occasion.
