Best sparkling wine from Australia and abroad
Taittinger, Pol Roger, Krug, Moet and Veuve. Yes, they’re all making an appearance on this year’s best sparkling list, but a new class of quality Australian bubbles is hot on their heels. | FULL LIST
For as long as The Weekend Australian Magazine has been producing a wine list it has included sparkling wines not just from our own wide brown land but also from the global home of sparkling, Champagne.
“The reason for that was when we began there was always good Australian sparkling wine just not a lot of it … but I think we can probably get to a point now where there are 20 Australians in this category.”
For now, we will keep a foot in each camp, bringing you the very best domestic and international bubbles, just in time for the celebration season.
Such is the upswell in quality of winemaking that Nick Ryan found this year’s assignment a challenge. His Australian pick – the 2017 Deviation Road ‘Beltana’ blanc de blancs – he described as an “achingly elegant” fizz: “As good as Australian bubbles gets.”
Overseas, wine from the houses of Pol Roger, Moet et Chandon, Veuve and Krug are each included, as is a NV Jacquesson. This is a bottle of sparkling long vaunted by champagne aficionados – and one you should not miss out on.
