In the latest round of the former couple’s protracted row over a French winery, Jolie, 47, alleged in court papers lodged in Los Angeles that Pitt was physically and verbally abusive.

She said that negotiations to sell her share of the business to Pitt, 58, fell apart over his insistence that she sign a non-disclosure agreement.

That would have prevented her from speaking publicly about the abuse, it is alleged in the court filing which has been seen by The Times. Jolie said that onboard an overnight flight in September 2016 from France to California Pitt attacked her and their six children, who were aged between eight and 15.

Pitt, the Oscar-winning star of films including Ocean’s Eleven and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, allegedly assaulted Jolie, at which point “the children rushed in and all bravely tried to protect each other”.

The filing added: “Before it was over, Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face. Some of the children pleaded with Pitt to stop. They were all frightened. Many were crying.

“With nowhere to go and to avoid Pitt’s wrath, Jolie and the children sat still and silent under blankets. Nobody dared to go to the bathroom. Pitt periodically emerged from the back of the plane to yell and swear at them.

“At one point, he poured beer on Jolie; at another, he poured beer and red wine on the children.”

The FBI investigated the allegations at the time and decided not to bring charges. Shortly after the alleged incident Jolie filed for divorce and the former couple have been locked in a years-long custody battle over four of their six children, the two others having reached adulthood.

Pitt and Jolie bought the 1,300-acre Château Miraval in Provence in 2008 and jointly invested millions of dollars in it. Pitt alleges Jolie violated his “contractual rights” when she sold her half of the business without his approval.
