Ever fancied yourself as a Tour de France contender? The full reality of the physical punishment endured in the iconic event has been laid bare by one of its contestants.

Polish rider Paweł Poljański posted a picture of his legs to social media after the 16th stage of the 3540km race.

The gruelling 165km section took Australian winner Michael Matthews a tick over three hours and 38 minutes to finish.

Poljański battled his way to 75th place, one minute and 43 seconds behind.

The 27-year-old admitted afterwards his well-worn legs were “a little tired”.
