Police release CCTV footage of the street where Chloe Jade Mason was fatally shot
Investigators believe 23-year-old Chloe Jade Mason was assaulted by two men known to her before being gunned down on a suburban street on Sunday morning.
Police have released CCTV footage of the suburban Queensland street where Chloe Jade Mason was allegedly chased and fatally shot last weekend, as part of an ongoing investigation.
The 23-year-old, known to family and friends as “CJ”, was found unconscious and not breathing on Railway Parade in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, just after midnight on December 22.
Police attempted to revive Ms Mason but she was declared dead at the scene.
A homicide investigation was launched, but the two men who allegedly assaulted, chased and shot Ms Mason remain at large.
Detectives from Caboolture Criminal Investigation Branch released footage on Friday morning that shows a portion of Railway Parade during the time they believe the murder took place.
The video only shows a small section of the street, but part of the altercation can be heard.
Although a parked car on the side of the street is all that can be seen for most of the video, a male voice can be heard shouting somewhere out of frame. He yells what sounds like “Come back here! Come back here!” while a dog barks.
At one point, someone rides through the frame on a bicycle, but it is unclear if he was involved.
The first male voice continues yelling indistinguishably over another voice, perhaps female.
Audio cuts out for part of the video, but sirens are heard approaching the scene once sound comes back.
Detective Inspector David Harbison said last weekend that police believed up to four shots were fired in the street and that Ms Mason suffered at least one gunshot wound.
He said while it was believed there were two men involved, local residents who spoke to police said it was “too dark” to give an accurate description of the suspects.
Police do not believe it was a random attack, and they think Ms Mason knew the two men who allegedly attacked her.
Investigators urge anyone who may have information to contact police, particularly anyone travelling along Railway Parade between 11.40pm on December 21 and 12.15am on December 22.
A Queensland Police spokesman said detectives “released this video for a purpose,” as they continue to appeal for further information.
As investigations continue, “CJ” has been remembered as a “big sister” in her community after her death.
Ms Mason’s friends, Amanda Maksimov and Colin Hadlow, laid flowers at the site of her death on Monday afternoon.
Mr Hadlow said the 23-year-old spent time with friends around Railway Parade often and that she was “like a big sister to the other girls in the area”.
“She stood up for them all,” he said. “She seemed very mature for her age … she had a lot of life experience … sadly.”
Ms Maksimov said she couldn’t believe Ms Mason was gone.
“She could hold her own,” she said. “I can’t believe she’s gone so young.”
Ms Mason’s sister, Hannah McKone, took to social media to pay tribute to her beloved younger sibling.
“Grieving the life you never got to have and the experiences we didn’t get the chance to share,” Ms McKone said on Facebook. “You would’ve been the most amazing mother.”
Ms McKone also started a GoFundMe to help her family farewell Ms Mason with a proper funeral service.
“I’m fundraising on behalf of my little sister Chloe,” the GoFundMe campaign said. “We are graciously asking for help and support in this. All funds donated will be directly utilised for Chloe’s funeral service.”
