Tributes for ‘a big sister to all’ allegedly chased, shot dead on Queensland street
Police are searching for two men who allegedly assaulted and killed Chloe Jade Mason on a suburban street, as her sister tells of the family’s grief over the life she ‘never got to have’.
Chloe Jade Mason has been remembered as a “big sister” in her community after she was allegedly chased and fatally shot in a suburban Queensland street in the early hours of Sunday.
The 23-year-old, known to friends and family as “CJ”, was found unconscious and not breathing on Railway Parade in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, about 12.10am on Sunday.
Police attempted to revive Ms Mason but she was declared dead at the scene.
Two men police allege assaulted, chased and shot Ms Mason have not been found, and a homicide investigation has been launched.
Ms Mason’s friends, Amanda Maksimov and Colin Hadlow, laid flowers at the site of her death on Monday afternoon.
Mr Hadlow said the 23-year-old spent time with friends around Railway Parade often and that she was “like a big sister to the other girls in the area”.
“She stood up for them all,” he said. “She seemed very mature for her age … she had a lot of life experience … sadly.”
Ms Maksimov said she couldn’t believe Ms Mason was gone. “She could hold her own,” she said. “I can’t believe she’s gone so young.”
Ms Mason’s sister, Hannah McKone, took to social media to pay tribute to her beloved younger sibling.
“Grieving the life you never got to have and the experiences we didn’t get the chance to share,” Ms McKone said on Facebook. “You would’ve been the most amazing mother.”
Ms McKone also started a GoFundMe to help her family farewell Ms Mason with a proper funeral service.
“I’m fundraising on behalf of my little sister Chloe,” the GoFundMe campaign said. “We are graciously asking for help and support in this. All funds donated will be directly utilised for Chloe’s funeral service.”
Detective Inspector David Harbison late on Sunday said police believe up to four shots were fired in the street.
Ms Mason suffered at least one gunshot wound, but Detective Inspector Harbison would not confirm how many.
He said while it is believed there were two men involved, local residents who spoke to police said it was “too dark” to give an accurate description of the suspects
Detectives do not believe it was a random attack, as they think Ms Mason knew the two men who allegedly attacked her.
Investigators urge anyone who may have information to contact police, particularly anyone travelling along Railway Parade from 11.40pm on Saturday who might have dashcam footage.
No arrests have been made and police have not identified any suspects.
Investigations are ongoing.
