The Met Gala shows the Kardashians are over
The Kardashians cannot keep up with a new generation of taste makers who are, by comparison, making them seem as shallow as Kim’s breathing in her Galliano corset.
Koalas have toppled the Kardashians from the top of the celebrity food chain.
Well, at least within the exclusive enclave of the Met Gala’s “garden” where America’s version of the royal family was relegated to mere wallflower status as the gum leaf mafia muscled in and made themselves at home on the famous steps in New York.
The Australian contingent of guests to score an invite to the invite-only $113.000 a head event was one of the biggest we’ve ever seen.
The usual suspects including Hugh Jackman, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin are now practically furniture at fashion’s version of the Super Bowl.
Thor star Chris Hemsworth was a co-chair, Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga was more graceful swan than marsupial, cardboard king Anthony Pratt paired shoes by the same fashion house with a hot pink jacket embellished with his Visy slogan and young(ish) singer Troye Sivan donned a Prada bib.
The theme for the event – which coincides with an art exhibition – was “Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion”. The official dress code was “the garden of time”.
Some understood the assignment.
After more than three decades of trying to crack the US market, Kylie Minogue made her debut looking like an ethereal nymph.
The singer who has had one of her most successful years to date with a Grammy, a Vegas residency and being deemed a “global icon” channelled her Neighbours alter ego Charlene with a threadbare Diesel ribbed knitted denim gown embellished with more than 500,000 crystals and dishevelled hair which leaned into the “sleeping” aspect of the evening.

Others like the other Kylie – cosmetics billionaire Kylie Jenner and her sister Kim Kardashian – did not.
Jenner rolled in wearing a nondescript cream frock with cones for cups.
Kardashian wore a sparkly silver gown custom made by John Galliano for Maison Margiela and a grey shawl.
The shock and awe this family relies on to generate headlines and therefore wealth, is getting tired. So too was Kardashian. With her dress pulled so tight Barbie would be shocked at the resulting waist circumference.
Her explanation of her outfit also suggested merely existing at that point was an effort. Many online commentators were worried she was going to slip into unconsciousness and potentially after this display, irrelevance.
“Oh this is like … what did we say? … The wildest night of my life in a garden and I just ran out and grabbed my boyfriend’s sweater, threw it on and had to get to work and my hair is all messed up,” Kardashian explained breathlessly.
A fresh, new crop of creatives coming through are now outshining and outsmarting Kris Jenner’s “brands”, sorry, daughters.
Singer Bad Bunny and Zendaya – both co-chairs with Hemsworth this year – are captivating fans with their approach to public events. They always dazzle but they fire up a different part of our brains, rather than just flesh and flashiness, they offer a more thoughtful approach to dressing and using fashion as a medium, an art form.
The Met Gala is the place to do that.
Take Zendaya, who wore two outfits and entered the event twice to show off incredible designing skills of Galliano and ornate archival pieces from Givenchy by the late Alexander McQueen. All teamed with delicate millinery, detailed make-up and on theme accessories including birds, flowers and sparkles.
