At this year's Met Gala, the theme was "Garden of Time" — at least one star has walked the carpet twice, two have dressed like trees, and another sent sand cascading down the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s iconic steps.
Welcome to The Australian's coverage of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit.
At this year’s Met Gala, always held on the first Monday in May, Australian star Chris Hemsworth will co-chair the party alongside actors Zendaya, musicians Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, welcoming A-listers to the museum for the exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
According to an announcement from the museum, the exhibition will feature 250 pieces from the archives of the Costume Institute deemed “sleeping beauties,” that is, pieces that are too fragile to ever be worn again.
"It made me feel like Ophelia resuscitated," actress Rebecca Hall told Vogue of the dreamy Danielle Frankel gown she wore.
Kendall Jenner, is the first person to ever wear this archival look from the Givenchy autumn/winter '99/'00 couture collection, designed by Alexander McQueen. The collection was presented on mannequins and never shown on the runway.
Model du jour Amelia Gray Hamlin wore a light-up, terrarium-inspired dress from Jun Takahashi's spring 2024 Undercover show.
For her 11th Met Gala, model, actress, and eternal cool girl Chloë Sevigny wore a dress by Turkish designer Dilara Fındıkoğlu.

Met Gala co-chair Zendaya walks the carpet for a second time in a second John Galliano look. This time, it's from his Givenchy spring 1996 haute couture collection. She's also wearing a headpiece from Alexander McQueen's mad hatter, Philip Treacy. The Irish milliner designed the headpiece for McQueen's spring 2007 show.
A sleeping beauty look that feels almost attainable. Rapper Doja Cat puts forward a chic reimagining of the bed time t-shirt in Vetements.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell in a fringed dress by Burberry.

Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki in Dior. The Crown star's waist-length flowing tresses are a wig designed by celebrity hairstylist James Pecis.
Kylie Jenner's seventh Met Gala look may just be her most subdued. The beauty mogul is wearing a custom design by Oscar de la Renta — which the house's co-designers, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, say was inspired by the garden statues mention in J.G. Ballard's short story, The Garden of Time, for which this evening's dress code is based.
