Life at 80 and beyond: how these well-known Australians are ageing

They’re in their ninth and tenth decades. So what do some of the nation’s leading elders have to say about ageing? Watch the video to preview their stories in coming weeks | WATCH

The secrets of prominent Australians for living a long life

It’s a familiar pattern. You’re in a prominent position, you’re interviewed widely and regularly, and you become a household name. Then you retire, and the spotlight moves elsewhere.

Ageing may be a natural part of life, but the voices of our oldest citizens are often muted, with published experiences of life in the ninth and tenth decades not always reflective of the long and varied decades that preceded them.

For the launch of its new health section, The Australian has interviewed well-known Australians about ageing. All of them are now in their 80s and 90s.

In coming weeks you’ll hear from some of the nation’s most respected elders, including the former governor-general Quentin Bryce, and Marilyn Jones, a founding member of the Australian Ballet, on life in the latter years.

There will be insights on healthy ageing, conversations about learning to live with loss, and tips from some of our greatest thinkers, including leading jurist Elizabeth Evatt, inaugural chief justice of the Family Court, and former federal science minister Barry Jones, on how to keep mind and body active.
