Dear readers,
Since The Australian’s first edition came spinning off the Canberra presses almost 60 years ago, its opinions have helped to shape the country – recording the daily discussion of a nation’s life and championing the contest of ideas.
From the beginning, the paper’s purpose was clear. “The Australian will not be a dull newspaper … It is to be independent in the purest sense of the word,” its editors wrote before the newspaper’s launch in 1964.
“It will help its readers to think, more knowledgeably, more hopefully, more critically, about the problems and issues confronting Australia and the world.”
Over the decades The Australian has engaged and sometimes enraged its readers, always with a view to promoting debate, challenging orthodoxy and advocating for a bigger and bolder vision of Australia.
In that same spirit we launch this weekend our first commentary newsletter, drawing together the best and sharpest writing of the week. It will feature our well-known stable of columnists – names such as Kelly, Albrechtsen, Ergas, Sheridan and Sloan – as well as a selection of guest contributors and new writers, whose bylines and words will become more familiar over time.
For no extra cost, subscribers can read the best of Lehmann, Bramston, Creighton, Credlin, and Cater, and watch editorial cartoonist Johannes Leak’s behind-the-scenes look at how his cartoon of the week developed and sprang to life on the page.
The Australian’s editorials, tackling the nation’s big issues and setting out the papers agenda, will also form part of the newsletter.
The best of global commentary, including writing from The Times, The Sunday Times and The Wall Street Journal, will be represented, as well as a special front-page flashback from The Australian’s archive.
As part of our ongoing commitment to covering all sides of the referendum debate, the newsletter will feature the week’s best commentary on the voice in the months leading up to that historic vote.
The first newsletter is set to hit subscriber inboxes on Sunday morning, just in time for your second coffee.
We hope you enjoy the read. Please sign up here to receive the newsletter every Sunday and unlock more from your subscription.
