Construction of a $100m pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Adelaide’s north has commenced, set to create more than 180 new hi-tech jobs.

The purpose-built facility, for UK pharmaceutical company Noumed Pharmaceuticals, will supply over-the-counter pharmaceutical products to pharmacies and health networks across Australia once production begins in 2026.

Noumed currently manufactures products it supplies to the Australian market offshore. Managing director Mark Thulborne said the new Adelaide facility would boost Australia’s sovereign capability for critical pharmaceutical products.

“By coming back into Australia, current and future clients can have the comfort that many of their products are being made in South Australia,” he said.

“This means a shorter lead time to their shelves and a supplier that can react quickly to their individual needs.

“I think this demonstrates our long-term commitment to the customers we serve, and it will give them an unmatched competitive advantage.”

Noumed, a global supplier of prescription and over-the-counter medicines, will receive up to $20m in federal funding to go towards the project.

The manufacturing facility will stretch over 26,000sq m of floor area, and will occupy a 43,000sq m site within Terre Property Partners’ Nexus North Industrial Estate in Salisbury South.

It will join several other national and international companies at the industrial estate, including Asahi, Telstra, Haigh’s Chocolates and FJT Logistics.

The project is expected to create 250 jobs during construction and Noumed will employ more than 180 people when local production begins.

Developer Terre Property Partners chief executive Mark Brammy said Adelaide’s north was emerging as an important hub for hi-tech manufacturing.

“We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Noumed Pharmaceuticals within the Nexus North Industrial Estate,” he said.

“The location is an ideal place for hi-tech industries and we’re looking forward to Noumed leading the way in Australian pharmaceutical manufacturing, right here in South Australia.”

Haigh’s broke ground on its new $130m manufacturing facility in December as part of a plan to double production over the next 10 years.

The facility is expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2025 and will create up to 250 new jobs.
